PerspectX is always been interested building aircraft and we have been on the same loop since 2004, until now we never lost interest of making cool 3d models. I have been part of developing extensive library of 3d models since day one and you can say I am an aircraft guy of 3d world 🙂 I love all kinds of aircraft specially the military whether they are from D-day to the fifth generations. When planning to build one I always look for an aircraft that is common, in service, historical or technically advance these are my criteria which is also very important for the company to sell models and we know these types sells very well but being in the ocean of competition we must also have things that aren’t common and very high in demand.

Searching for an exotic helicopter bumped me to K-Max the helicopter made by Kaman and was founded by engineer Charles Huron Kaman in the early 40’s, yes they are helicopter as we have branded an aircraft with propeller on top that lifts and land vertically but this particular helicopter is very unique with 2 blades separated in an angular position that counter rotates side by side, you can google the whole info about this technology for further information.

To my excitement I quickly jumped to finding references and started modeling, luckily I found 3 orthographical views that aided me to build the 3d model much easier than by just looking at the pictures, well other pictures obviously needed to get all the details I need to complete the parts. There are numerous configurations to choose from but I decided to focus on the military for now but later planning to make a fire deterrent version when I have the time to build so. Below are some of the references I used to get all the details I need, I have tons of images that I have collected from various websites and if you are new to 3d modeling having good number of references are really important.

I will not go through the whole process of building it but my technique is poly modeling combined with nurbs, starting from the main fuselage, the interior, wheels and to the smallest details that I can possibly add. Below are some of the raw models before I layed the textures to it.

K-Max is a very unique helicopter and I enjoyed building it, definitely worth adding to our 3d library.
